Israel’s Necessary Stand Against Iran’s Aggression

Matthew Narh Tetteh

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, escalating sharply since Israel’s preemptive strikes on June 13, 2025, represents a critical juncture in the Middle East’s security landscape. These military actions, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, are not only justified but essential to safeguarding Israel’s survival against an existential threat posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its relentless aggression through proxies and direct attacks. Israel’s response is a bold and necessary defense of its people, its sovereignty, and the stability of the region.

For decades, Iran has positioned itself as Israel’s foremost adversary, openly calling for the Jewish state’s destruction while arming and funding terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas. These groups, part of Iran’s self-proclaimed “axis of resistance,” have targeted Israeli civilians with rockets, suicide bombings, and other attacks, most notably Hamas’s October 7, 2023, assault that killed nearly 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians. Iran’s support for these proxies is not merely rhetorical; it has supplied them with advanced weaponry, including ballistic missiles, which Iran itself has now unleashed directly on Israeli cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa, killing at least 24 people and injuring hundreds since the latest escalation began.

Israel’s strikes, which targeted over 100 Iranian military and nuclear sites, including the Natanz enrichment facility and key missile production centers, were a direct response to Iran’s accelerating nuclear program and its barrage of missiles aimed at Israeli population centers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that Iran’s nuclear capabilities and its production of ballistic missiles—capable of carrying up to 2,200 pounds of explosives—pose an “imminent threat” to Israel’s existence. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s recent censure of Iran for violating nuclear non-proliferation obligations, coupled with reports of 400kg of near-weapons-grade uranium, underscores the urgency of Israel’s actions.

Critics of Israel’s strikes argue they risk escalating the conflict into a broader regional war. However, this perspective ignores the reality that Iran has been waging a shadow war against Israel for decades, using proxies to avoid accountability while advancing its nuclear ambitions. Israel’s operation, which neutralized key Iranian military leaders like General Hossein Salami and degraded air defenses, has demonstrated remarkable precision and effectiveness, establishing air superiority over Tehran and significantly setting back Iran’s nuclear program. Unlike Iran, which has deliberately targeted Israeli civilians, Israel’s strikes have focused on military and nuclear targets, minimizing civilian casualties despite Iran’s claims to the contrary.

The United States, Israel’s primary ally, has provided critical support, including intelligence and bunker-busting bombs, though President Trump has publicly distanced himself from direct involvement. This support underscores the shared interest in preventing a nuclear-armed Iran, which would not only threaten Israel but destabilize the entire region, potentially targeting Gulf states and disrupting global energy supplies. Israel’s actions, while unilateral in execution, align with the broader goal of curbing Iran’s malign influence, a concern echoed by allies like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who provided intelligence for earlier strikes.

Iran’s response—firing waves of ballistic missiles at Israeli cities—has only reinforced the necessity of Israel’s campaign. Despite Iran’s boasts of a vast missile arsenal, Israel’s sophisticated air defenses, bolstered by U.S. systems like THAAD, have intercepted many of these attacks, though some missiles have tragically penetrated, causing civilian deaths. Iran’s strategy of targeting civilian areas, contrasted with Israel’s focus on military infrastructure, highlights the moral and strategic divide between the two nations.

Netanyahu’s resolve to continue Operation Rising Lion until Iran’s nuclear and military threats are neutralized reflects Israel’s unwavering commitment to its security. The elimination of senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists, while a significant blow to Tehran, is not about regime change but about dismantling the tools of Iran’s aggression. Israel’s history of decisive action—such as the 1981 strike on Iraq’s Osirak reactor—shows its willingness to act when existential threats loom, often with tacit international support despite public criticism.

The path forward is fraught with challenges, but Israel’s actions are a necessary stand against a regime that has consistently prioritized ideological hostility over regional stability. Iran’s threats of “severe punishment” and its calls for a ceasefire ring hollow when its missiles continue to rain on Israeli civilians. Israel, with its unmatched military precision and resilience, is not only defending its own people but also sending a message to the world: the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, backed by a network of terrorist proxies, cannot be tolerated. The international community, particularly the U.S., must stand firmly behind Israel to ensure that Iran’s ambitions are curtailed, securing a safer future for the region and beyond.
