Israel’s Resilience Against UN Security Council Bias

Matthew Narh Tetteh

Israel, a beacon of democracy in a turbulent Middle East, faces relentless and disproportionate scrutiny from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which often amplifies the narratives of authoritarian regimes and terrorist sympathizers. The UNSC’s recent failure to adopt a resolution on June 4, 2025, calling for a Gaza ceasefire—vetoed by the United States for omitting condemnation of Hamas’s terrorism and its October 7, 2023, massacre of over 1,200 Israelis—exemplifies this bias. The U.S. veto, a vital defense against unfair gang-ups, blocked a resolution that ignored Hamas’s atrocities while targeting Israel, underscoring America’s critical role in countering the UNSC’s skewed agenda.

Historically, the UNSC has passed over 130 resolutions condemning Israel between 1967 and 1989, frequently criticizing its defensive actions or settlement policies, while rarely addressing Hamas’s deliberate attacks on civilians or use of human shields. For instance, a 2023 Russian-drafted resolution condemned violence against civilians but failed to name Hamas, gaining only four votes. Resolutions like 2334 (2016) consistently single out Israel without acknowledging Hamas’s aggression. The U.S. has wielded its veto power over 40 times since 1970 to shield Israel from such biased resolutions, preventing the UNSC from piling on one-sided condemnations that embolden Israel’s adversaries.

Despite this institutional hostility, Israel thrives—excelling in technology, medicine, and agriculture while safeguarding its citizens against constant threats. The UNSC’s selective outrage, diverting attention from crises like Syria or Iran’s nuclear ambitions, undermines its credibility. With the U.S. steadfastly using its veto to counter these unfair biases and gang-ups, Israel’s resilience and commitment to its security and values stand as a powerful rebuke to the UN’s flawed moral posturing.
